Medical Billing and Coding

Medical billing and coding is a vital part of a health care facility. Qualified billing and coding professionals are essential to run a successful health care business. Even though medical billing and coding are two separate jobs, they both belong to the administrative department of health care facility and work together to get the payment from the insurance company for the health care service provided to the patients.

Medical billing is a process of submitting the claims to the insurance company and other health care agencies in order to get paid for the service provided by a health care professional to the patients. Medical billers are responsible to make sure that all billing procedures are being done correctly. Medical biller’s duty involves talking to the patients, insurance companies and health care professionals on a regular basis in order to make an efficient billing.  Since medical billers have to go through all the details of the medical invoices and coding, they should have a thorough knowledge of the entire billing and coding system. Medical billing is a perfect job for someone who loves to interact with people and also would like to spend time on analyzing invoices and data.

Medical coders on the other hand, do not have much interaction with any other people apart from health care provider. Their duty is to analyze the data and assign the alphanumeric codes to the diagnosis, tests, treatments and the procedures done by the health care provider. Even though coding looks like a simple straightforward procedure, it is very complicated. Coding should be properly done to get the payment. Any error and mismatch of the code could lead to delay in the payment or rejection of the claim. Coding is also used by hospitals and doctors for internal data collection and planning. Medical codes are also required by the international health organization to track patterns of diseases. Hence, coding is very critical in a health care system.

Medical billers and coders work together to ensure proper billing and timely payment. While most of the small medical practices have an in house employee to do both billing and coding, larger hospitals have found it convenient and cost effective to outsource the entire billing procedures to medical billing companies which handle both billing and coding.

Medical billing and coding professionals work in an office environment away from the patients and general public. In general, their work schedule is 8AM-5PM. However, depending on the work load, they may have to stretch their work timings. Medical billing and coding professionals also have the flexibility of working from home. They do so as independent contractors working for multiple projects, or work as an employee of medical billing company. However, in order to let someone work from home, employers expect minimum few years of experience in this field.

Hospitals and other health care facilities always prefer experienced professionals or people with some kind of degree or certificate to do their billing job as it involves complicated medical terminologies, insurance procedures and other administrative tasks. So, even though it is not compulsory to be certified, it is always better to get certified in order to get a job. Certification or degree provides the skills required to do the job as well as provides the credentials to prove the qualifications.

Medical billers and coders work in hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies and other medical offices. Their salary depends on various factors such as experience, certification and work location and so on. However, as per salary.com, the middle 50 percent of medical billers and coders earn between $35,999 and $44,562.

Medical billing and coding is one of the ten fastest growing health care careers in today’s world. It is an ideal job for someone who likes to work in health care sector, but prefers to do the administrative role rather than patient management.
