Medical coding is one of the administrative careers in health care sector that is experiencing tremendous demand. The boom period of medical coding jobs started around 1996. Today, most of the medical care providers get paid for their service from the respective insurance companies. In order to make the payment, insurance companies demand accurate and detailed medical records of the patients. However, medical terminologies are hard to understand and hence medical codes are used in the patient medical records. All diseases, tests, diagnosis and treatment procedures have unique, universally accepted alphanumeric codes that help the insurance companies to understand the claim much easier. Medical coder’s job is to analyze the patient records, hunt down for specific clues and assign the alphanumeric codes to the procedures and service provided to the patients. In order to make a proper billing, the claim should be free of any errors. Hence, assigning the perfect code is very critical- without this, medical care providers do not get paid for the service rendered to the patients.

Medical coders work in an office setting. Medical coders are hired by hospitals, clinics, outpatient care centers, family practices, nursing homes and insurance companies. Medical coders, who work for organization that operates 24/7, may have to work on shifts. Medical billing job can be done being at home. However, that requires years of experience working in a medical office before going solo.

There is no rule which states that all medical coders should be certified or formally trained. However, as incorrect medical coding can cause legal issues and delayed reimbursement, doctors and other health care provides always look for formally trained or experienced professionals to handle their medical coding. Certification or degree is critical for medical coders to get properly qualified and stay up to date with the current trend. Training programs provide the candidates the required computer skills, comprehension and all the basic office management skills along with coding. There are many institutes that offer training programs for aspiring medical coders. The training courses are of 3 types; distant education programs, regular classroom learning programs and hybrid courses. Hybrid course gives the flexibility of distant education as well provides the practical experience of the regular classroom learning. Medical coding professionals that graduate from an accredited school are recognized by all employers and hence have greater career opportunities. A medical coding professional can get certified by successively clearing an exam upon completion of diploma or degree course. Certified medical coders are preferred by all the employers as they have a proof for their efficiency and qualification.
