Medical transcription courses last from 9 months to 2 years. While 9 months training course offers diploma, 2 years course provides associate degree. There are many short term courses available as well. However, they are not recommended for 2 reasons; first of all employers do not prefer to hire candidates with short term degree, and secondly, it is not possible to master the skill of medical transcription in such a short duration. All aspiring medical transcriptionists are recommended to take up courses that are accredited. Certificate from an accredited school is recognized by the potential employers and it is a proof that the candidate has obtained quality education in the specific field. Along with accreditation, candidates should always enquire about the subjects they cover, their payment methods and how often the course is updated. Since, medical transcriptionists handle patient medical records; they should abide by the rules and regulations of the government that are related to medical field. Medical transcriptionist courses train students in ethics and government guidelines, data entry, word processing and computer skills along with transcription and other related subjects.
Medical transcription does not cost a hefty amount. The fee depends on the duration of the course and the method of payment opted. Unlike regular colleges, many online courses do not offer any financial assistance. However, some online schools understood the difficulty of the students and offer flexible payment options.
Most of the medical training schools have a separate career placement department. This does not guarantee a job upon completion of the course. However, career placement department assists the candidates in searching a job.
